THANK YOU to all who participated in our First HOW Live Chat! Here is a pretty transcript of the hour with Naching!
Admin Kbatz: Welcome to the HorrorAddicts.net Online Writers Conference!
Admin Kbatz: Tonight we have Naching T. Kassa, Horror Addicts.net Publisher and Dark Divinations anthology Editor will be chatting with HOW!
Admin Kbatz: If you have a question for our Guest, please post a ? and wait for the moderator to call on you.
Emz: ?
Admin Kbatz: Naching is a wife, mother, horror writer, and Head of HorrorAddicts.net Publishing. She’s created 17 short stories, two novellas, a poem, and co-created two children. She lives in Eastern Washington State with Dan Kassa, her husband and biggest supporter.
Admin Kbatz: Emz ask Naching!
Emz: My question is about the Dark Divinations submission call, but maybe Naching, can you tell us what the theme is so my question will make sense?
Admin Kbatz: How did the theme for Dark Divinations happen?
Emz: That was my question. Lmao... how did she come up with the theme. What inspired her?
nkassa: Ok! The theme for Dark Divinations is Victorian (1837-1901) Divination Horror. You must write a story set in the Victorian period anywhere in the world which involves horror and a method of divination. (Seances, crystal balls, tarot cards, etc.) I am a HUGE fan of Sherlock Holmes! Have been since I was 10 and discovered him watching the Granada series starring Jeremy Brett. I love the darkness of the Victorian period and wanted to create a horror anthology set in it.

Admin Kbatz: How did you come to Horror Addicts.net, Naching?
Emz: What inspired you to pick this theme?
Admin Kbatz: Right now Emz is asking Naching about the Dark Divinations anthology themes
nkassa: I discovered HorrorAddicts.net as a contestant in the Next Great Horror Writer Contest. When it ended, Emz asked if any of the contestants would like to join the staff and I volunteered. I picked the theme because I love divination.

Admin Kbatz: For submission information on Dark Divinations, visit horroraddicts.wordpress.com/current-submission-calls/
nkassa: It was terrific! There's a book coming out called, "The #NGHW Editor's Pick" which features 14 stories, audio plays, and poems, written by contestants. I detail my experience there. But, I had a lot of fun. It was challenging and I wound up competing with myself.
Emz: We are so glad you enjoyed the experience.

Admin Kbatz: How is the submission process going for Dark Divinations?
nkassa: It was great! I think everyone should try out if they get the opportunity.
nkassa: The submissions are rolling in! I haven't looked at any because they are blind submissions.
Emz: When reading subs, what is the biggest thing you are looking for?
nkassa: I am looking for stories which conform to the guidelines and are ORIGINAL. Can't stress that enough. I want people to scare me and amaze me.

kimrichards: ?
Admin Kbatz: Go ahead Kim!
kimrichards: When I read the guidelines, this reminded me of the show, Penny Dreadful. The show had some real events from history built into it's storyline but given a supernatural origin (the deathly fog). How much reality do you want to see?
nkassa: As much as you'd like to put in. If you wish to use real people from history, that's fine with me. I'll even take fictional characters such as Sherlock Holmes.
kimrichards: Awesome. Thank you.
Admin Kbatz: Did you have another question Kim?
nkassa: I will check and make sure the fictional characters can be used though. We don't want to infringe on copyright. You're welcome!
kimrichards: Nope. That was the one thing I was curious about. This sounds like something fun to do.

Admin Kbatz: Dark Divinations submission deadline I believe is Halloween.
nkassa: Does anyone have questions about my Workshop? Submitting Your Short Story?
nkassa: It is Halloween.
Emz: The workshop is super helpful. I read it before the chat. Great job Naching. I was wondering... What is the biggest misconception you had about publishing as a newbie author?

lilyauthor: I have a question, are you picky about thee difference between divination and fotune telling? It doesn't matter to me, but i'm just checking.
Emz: Was I clear? Like something you thought about the publishing world that you found out wasn't true or isn't as scary as you thought?
Admin Kbatz: Great question. Emz has a workshop on Newbie Tips. She is chatting tomorrow Monday 10 am pacific/ 1 pm eastern, too!
Admin Kbatz: Emz question is first, then Lily's. If you have a question, post a ? and wait for the mod to call on you.
nkassa: When I first started submitting stories, the first one I ever sent out was accepted. I thought getting published was easy and I see now, how hard it is to get published. Especially getting into professional paying markets.
nkassa: I am not picky at all! Any kind of divination or fortune telling is acceptable.
Emz: All about the timing! Congrats on that first pub, though. Some authors get discouraged because their first is declined.
nkassa: Yes, indeed! I was lucky!

kgfinfrock: How many stories have you had rejected and how do you deal with this?
nkassa: Oh my! Hahahahah! So many! I never give up though! I just had a story accepted that I wrote and started submitting 4 years ago! You just have to persevere.
Admin Kbatz: What is the submission length Naching?
nkassa: 2000-5000 words for Dark Divinations.

Admin Kbatz: Why did you chose to post a Short Story workshop Naching?
Emz: ?
nkassa: Because of Dark Divinations. I don't want to turn anyone away because they didn't follow the guidelines. I want to get as many great submissions as we can.
Emz: What is your favorite part of the writing/editing/subbing/editing/publication process? And what do you like the least?
kgfinfrock: ?
nkassa: I love writing. It's always fun to begin and get that story rolling. That's my favorite. My least favorite is editing. I can't stand killing my darlings, even though they have to go.
Admin Kbatz: Go ahead KG
kgfinfrock: I know the submission process is blind, but how many people will be reading and choosing them and who are these people?
nkassa: There are four people involved. Emz, Laura Perkins, Cedar George, and myself will make up the editorial team. We won't see the submissions. They will be collected by an assistant.
nkassa: Submissions containing any personal info on the manuscript itself will be deleted.

Admin Kbatz: This has been an excellent, informative chat! General questions, submission process, Victorian technicalities. Excellent.
nkassa: An assistant, I'm not sure which right now, will separate the manuscripts from the e-mails and send them to us to read.
nkassa: We won't see any of the personal info.
Admin Kbatz: For submission information on Dark Divinations, visit horroraddicts.wordpress.com/current-submission-calls/
Emz: One of our PAs is making sure the MSs are scrubbed so that we don't go in with any pre-conceived ideas about the writing.

lilyauthor: The chat was so good that my browser crashed.
Admin Kbatz: Excellent!
nkassa: hahahah! Hey, anyone want to know about a funny Ouija board experience?
Admin Kbatz: Oh my
nkassa: My best friend and I were playing with the Ouija Board in our 20s and we asked what spirit was speaking to us. It said it was an elf called MAGEUL. We asked what MAGUEL stood for and it was Marriage Always Good Every Union Love.
